What are employers looking for in a vet graduate? | |
We spoke with Dr Vera Pickering, Practice owner, Feelgood Vet HospitalDescribe the type of vet graduate you look to recruit for your organisation Bubbly personality, passionate about vet science, wanting to learn new techniques/skills and willing to extend themselves, adaptable, gets on well with people. What are the generic attributes you require in an employee and why are these important in the workplace? Good basic surgery and medicine skills, good communication skills, ability to work with others helpfully. A happy workplace of people working together can always build on basic skills.
What advice would you give to undergraduate veterinary science students who are looking to become more employable by the time they graduate? To be broadminded and willing to listen/try unfamiliar ideas. Not necessarily assume that the uni-taught way is the only way. Be willing to go to different places to build on skills. Compassion, listening and empathy with clients' different points of view as well as animals. Do you have any other insights from an employer's perspective? It is important to have a balanced life and not take yourself too seriously, as the profession can take over your life, resulting in vets resenting the input required, losing interest and not enjoying the profession. |
