What are employers looking for in an engineering graduate? | |
![]() We spoke to Lauren Jones from Huntsman Corporation AustraliaDescribe the type of engineering graduate you look to recruit for your organisation. We look for engineers who not only have excelled in their studies but exhibit excellent interpersonal skills. What are the generic attributes you require in an employee and why are these important in the workplace? Graduates with good communication skills who are highly motivated and are concerned about the quality of their output are highly regarded. In chemical manufacturing, the engineers must understand their role in the manufacturing chain and the importance of getting quality product to the customer. To achieve this, they must be able to communicate with personnel at all levels of the organisation. What do you look for when you are interviewing an engineering graduate for a position? In addition to the skills and qualities already listed, we are interested in engineers who exhibit leadership abilities and – of significant importance in chemical manufacturing – who are safety-oriented.
What advice would you give to undergraduate engineering students who are looking to become more employable by the time they graduate? Get out there and work in your field, either through vacation work or the sandwich style courses available. This will give you an idea of the numerous directions your career could take, will give you contacts in the industry and will give you invaluable experience when starting out. Do you have any other insights from an employer's perspective? Your job should be enjoyable, challenging and satisfying. If you are passionate about what you do, you will find doors opening up to greet you. Good luck. |
