What are employers looking for in an IT graduate?

We spoke with Michael, an IBM Corporation employee in charge of graduate recruitment

Describe the type of IT graduate you look to recruit for your organisation.

We look to recruit students not just to fit the 'immediate role on the table', but graduates who will make good long-term IBM employees. To IBM it is important to recruit the leaders of tomorrow.

What are the generic attributes you require in an employee and why are these important in the workplace?

Graduates who have experience of working in teams are highly regarded. I look for graduates who are flexible, who have good communications skills with both technical and business professionals. The ability to be proactive and set the agenda is seen as a good leadership quality.

"Graduates who have experience of working in teams are highly regarded..."

What advice would you give to undergraduate IT students who are looking to become more employable by the time they graduate?

I would advise students to gain experience in both paid and unpaid work/projects outside of their studies. The ability to manage multiple facets of life such as work, study, sports and community activities, demonstrates to potential employers one's ability to relate to people from all walks of life. Voluntary activities are also a sign that a student has personal motivation which will delight potential employers.

Do you have any other insights from an employer's perspective?

Academic results in studies are good; applied results in life are best.
